Hi David, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us about the "Sister Imperator" comic series. We're thrilled to have this opportunity to discuss your work with the Ghost community. Before we dive into the specific questions, is there anything you'd like to share about your experience working on this project or your excitement for its release?

First off, I’m genuinely thrilled about Sister Imperator. Working on this project has been an incredible adventure, allowing me to merge my passion for comics with the enigmatic world of Ghost. I’ve had the chance to explore an artistic style different from what I’m typically known for, and each day brings a new creative challenge. I can’t wait for fans to dive into the story and discover all the dedication I’ve poured into every page!

How did you first discover Ghost, and what drew you to their aesthetic?

I stumbled upon Ghost through their music by accident—specifically the Rats music video on YouTube. Their imagery completely hooked me. I discovered them late, but that worked in my favor, as there was already plenty of material to enjoy. To me, Ghost is one-of-a-kind: they blend powerful, melodic sound with a theatrical flair that grabs you from the first chord. At their shows, you don’t just hear metal—it’s like stepping into a visual ritual. The frontman transforms into iconic characters like Papa Emeritus, and the whole spectacle transports you to an almost mystical universe. I missed seeing them in 2019 when they came to Spain as openers for Metallica alongside Bokassa, but this year they’re playing Madrid again soon. I’ll move heaven and earth to catch them live—it’ll be an epic experience!

Is there a particular Ghost album or era that resonates most with you artistically?

When it comes to which Ghost album resonates most with me, Meliora is undeniably the one that marked a turning point. It balances heavy riffs with captivating melodies and, honestly, best captures their essence. Maybe it’s because it was the first one I heard, and that thrill of discovery sticks with you. That first impression leaves an indelible mark.

How long does it typically take you to produce a single comic page for Sister Imperator?

I wish I knew—that’s the million-dollar question! It depends on the page’s complexity. Some pages take a day, while others take three or more, especially if they’re detail-heavy. I’d always love more time, but you work with what you’ve got. Though personal life sometimes causes delays, I’m still doing what I love. There are never enough hours. Let’s just say I’ve pulled many all-nighters, blurring days and nights.

Can you walk us through your creative process? Do you start with analog sketches, or is it a completely digital process?

I’m a bit chaotic here—I switch things up. I like starting with analog sketches; there’s a spontaneity to pencil and paper that sparks creativity. But over the years, I’ve realized digital is more efficient—no scanning needed. Here’s my usual workflow: I read Corinna’s script a few times, then reach out to my editors, Jenny and Misha, with any questions or ideas about pacing or tone. They clarify things and pass notes to Tobias [Forge] if needed. Once everything’s settled, I break down the script page by page, roughing out panel layouts while considering dialogue placement and character positioning. These are quick sketches but clear enough to convey the flow. After sketching the entire issue, I send it to my editors. If they or Tobias suggest tweaks, we adjust. Once approved, the real work begins: finalizing inks, adding backgrounds, and refining details. I send the inked pages (with temporary grays and text) back for feedback. After final approvals, it goes to colorist Thiago Rocha and letterer Jimmy Betancourt. It’s a team effort—I just wait to see the magic of the finished comic. Exciting, right?

What digital programs do you use to create the comics?

Digitally, I primarily use Clip Studio Paint—it’s fast and straightforward (though “fast” is relative!). I’ve also used Procreate or even traditional methods when time allows, which isn’t often.

We've noticed during our reading of the comic that you've put a lot of detail into the characters' facial expressions. Can you tell us about your approach to capturing these nuanced emotions, and why you felt it was important to focus on this aspect of the artwork?

Wow, I’m glad you noticed! Facial expressions are like windows to a character’s soul. I focus on them because even the tiniest emotion can shift a scene’s entire vibe, making characters feel authentic and relatable. I’m not always happy with the results, but your comment truly means a lot.

How challenging was it to develop an art style that aligns with Ghost's vision for the overall look of the comics?

Matching Ghost’s vision was tricky at first. I was juggling other projects with wildly different styles (like DC’s Batman or Scooby-Doo). But with Sister Imperator, I got to experiment. The comic spans different decades (like the ’50s or ’70s), so I adapted my style to each era. Immersing myself in their world helped strike that balance. It was a challenge, but I’m thrilled with the outcome.

Did you draw inspiration from Ghost's album art or existing imagery when creating the visual style for Sister Imperator?

Absolutely. Beyond aesthetics, I dove deep into Ghost’s lore. Their music videos and shorts—packed with symbolism and a unique atmosphere—helped me grasp that dark, mystical universe. While working, I’d play tracks like Dance Macabre or Mary On A Cross to stay immersed in that vibe.

How closely did you work with Tobias Forge and Corinna Bechko during the creative process?

Not as much as you might think! My collaboration with Tobias and Corinna wasn’t face-to-face. Everything flowed through my editors, who provided Corinna’s approved script with Tobias’ notes. This actually gave me a lot of freedom to approach the project my way. As I mentioned earlier, the process is highly organized teamwork. Dark Horse handled it brilliantly to keep things smooth. That said, Tobias has final say on everything—script, art, colors, lettering, and Mikael Eriksson’s gorgeous covers (seriously, those covers are stunning!).

Were there any specific references or materials provided by Ghost to help you visualize Sister Imperator's world?

Yes! They shared visual guidelines rather than direct references. For example, they suggested iconic locations and costume details tailored to each era, which required a lot of research—tedious but fascinating. Oh, and Tobias recommended films like I Spit on Your Grave, X, and Barbarian for inspiration. Little did he know I’m already a huge fan of that genre!

What was the most challenging aspect of bringing Sister Imperator's character to life visually?

Capturing her duality—balancing her strength with subtle vulnerability. I refined every expression and gesture to convey that complexity. Honestly, I’ve spent so much time with her that I almost fell for this charismatic, unhinged character!

Without going into details and spoiling, are there any Easter eggs or hidden references to Ghost lore that fans should look out for in the comics?

Absolutely! I’ve sprinkled subtle nods to Ghost’s history and symbolism throughout. Sharp-eyed fans will spot them, but the story is also designed to appeal to newcomers. Ghost’s lore is deep, and this comic taps into that richness.

How do you balance staying true to Ghost's established aesthetic while bringing your own artistic vision to the project?

I was chosen for my stylistic versatility. Early on, I leaned into a grittier tone, but my editors wisely suggested elegance for certain sequences. It’s about blending Ghost’s iconic mystique—Sister Imperator’s enigmatic past, her fierce charisma—with my personal touch. The result honors Ghost’s legacy while feeling fresh.

Were there any particular Ghost songs or lyrics that influenced your visual interpretations?

Definitely. Their haunting, poetic lyrics shaped the comic’s atmosphere. Specific lines evoked imagery I translated into scenes. As I mentioned earlier, tracks like Dance Macabre and Mary On A Cross were on loop while working!

What advices would you give to the artists who read this?

I’m no role model—just a regular guy chasing his passion. You don’t need formal training; storytelling and emotional impact matter more than technical perfection. If you’re committed to comics, be ready to live at your desk. It’s grueling, but if you love it, it’s worth every hour.

What was your reaction when you were first approached to work on this project?

Thrilled! It felt like a dream—merging comics, metal, and film (my three loves!) into one. Working on such a high-caliber production with Ghost’s universe? Unreal.

Have you had the opportunity to attend a Ghost ritual, and if so, how has that experience influenced your work on the comics?

Not yet, but fingers crossed for Madrid this year!

Without going into details and spoiling, are there any particular pages or scenes in the comics that you're especially proud of?

There’s one where emotion and action collide perfectly—it encapsulates Sister Imperator’s essence. Out of the nearly 100 pages I drew, that scene (and a few others) makes me proud.

How do you think the Sister Imperator comics will enhance fans' understanding of Ghost's mythology?

It adds layers to Ghost’s lore, visualizing elements words alone can’t capture. Fans will uncover Sister Imperator’s past, her dynamic with Papa Nihil, and more. It’s a visual dive into the mystery that fuels Ghost’s world.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your time and openness in answering our questions. Your insights will undoubtedly be invaluable to Ghost fans around the world. As we wrap up, is there anything else you'd like to share with the fans – perhaps about the comic, your experience with the Ghost universe, or any message you'd like to convey to the readers?

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your support. I poured everything into this project, surrounded by immense talent. I hope you cherish the hidden details and emotional beats as much as I loved creating them. It’s bittersweet—my part’s done, but I’d leap back into Ghost’s universe in a heartbeat. Keep exploring their world—it’s full of surprises!
